So, what are shares, anyway?

How a share offers the opportunity to secure exactly the same thing as an investment property—without noisy tenants!

SHARES, PUT basically, are pieces of the ownership of public companies. Every country of any significance—yes, even including Zimbabwe—has a marketplace where these tiny bits of businesses are traded between the business’s co-owners and those who’d like to be.

In a bygone age, gentlemen in London’s coffee houses (where the whole share trading thing got going) decided to call these certificates that denote part ownership of companies as ‘stocks’, as opposed to ‘bonds’ or public debt notes given to those lending money to governments. So the marketplaces where shares are traded are called ‘stock’ rather than ‘share’ exchanges.
