Pitfalls of donating your income

CAN YOU avoid tax on income due to you by making a donation thereof to a charity?

This question pops up from time to time, but it made national news about 15 years ago when it was reported that Rael Levitt, an estate agent, had donated certain commission earned by him to a charity set up to assist widows and orphans in need.

While such a donation is commendable, if the income donated had beneficially accrued to Levitt prior to the donation having been made, he would most likely have still find himself liable for tax, notwithstanding the fact that the entire commission earned had been donated.
